February 2020

Principal’s Message:

Dear Families,

As we continue to enjoy the winter season, please ensure that your children are appropriately dressed for outdoor play at school. This includes our youngest and oldest students. As a reminder, if the temperatures dip below -20, we are required by board policy to keep students inside during break, however we will try to get students outside and active as much as possible. In addition, please keep in mind that supervision starts at 9:00am, so students should not be arriving before then, and will not be permitted to enter the school until invited by the teacher on duty at 9:00am. In addition, our climber is closed during the winter months as snow and ice combined with rubber boots makes the climber less safe.

In order to continue to maintain the volume of traffic in our parking lot we encourage our students to walk to school or take the bus. If that is not possible, thank you for dropping students off at Oakville Trafalgar High School and for using the path to walk to Maple Grove. Only FDK Parents may use the Kiss & Ride, but if they are parking, thank you for using the spots at OTHS.

Looking forward to a fantastic February!

Principal M. McKenzie Wells

Maple Grove PS

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Presentation for Grades 7/8

  • It is never too early to teach youth about the dangers of impaired driving and getting in a vehicle with an impaired driver.
  • Maple Grove school will be hosting a MADD Canada School Presentation called Over the Edge on February 21’st at 2:00 p.m for all our grade 7 and 8 students. It opens with a fictional story that illustrates the tragic consequences of driving while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. Throughout the film, students will see when this tragedy could have been prevented by making different choices. The second half of the movie contains real testimonials from victims/survivors of impaired driving that are emotional and powerful.
  • So why is it important for students in grades 7 & 8 to view Over the Edge? Although students in these grades are not driving yet, he or she will soon be thinking about the future possibility of driving. They may already find themselves in situations where alcohol and drugs are present. As well, they may have opportunities to ride with an inexperienced teen driver. As they learn to be more independent, they need to know the facts and be ready to avoid dangerous situations involving impaired driving.
  • Over the Edge has an enormous impact on Canadian students and will influence their own decision-making for years to come. By educating our future generation about impaired driving, lives will be saved and injuries prevented. Impaired driving is a totally senseless crime and is 100% preventable. If you child is sensitive to this type of presentation and you feel that they will not be able to handle this type of message, Please email Ms. Lukawecky and we will make alternative arrangements for your child during this time.

Ontario Skills Presentation for Grades 7/8

  • Maple Grove is excited to have a presentation for our grade 7’s and 8’s on February 4th to educate the Intermediate students about the trades and technology professions that are in high demand in the province of Ontario. A Liaison Officer will be coming to Maple Grove to to encourage students to make informed decisions about their future. Since 1998, SkillsOntario has been delivering their presentation What’s Out There in the Skilled Trades and Technologies? to help educate students on the hundreds of career opportunities available in the construction, motive power, service, industrial and technology sectors. During the presentation, students get to discover the benefits of careers in the skilled trades and technologies and they get to take a visual tour in the life of various skilled trade workers. Students are highly encouraged to consider careers that fit their desired lifestyle, personality and interests.
